Elmendorf JSS ROCC

Elmendorf JSS ROCC (1983-Active) - A Cold War JSS System Regional Operations Control Center first established in 1983 on Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Borough of Anchorage, Alaska. Now an active NORAD Regional Air Operations Center (RAOC) center. Royal Canadian Air Force Capt. Dave Gosselin, 176th Air Defense Squadron senior director, tracks aircraft in Alaska air space from the Alaskan NORAD Region Regional Air Operations Center at Elmendorf AFB. Elmendorf JSS ROCC Ground was broken on 13 Jun 1980 and the JSS ROCC facility was completed in 1982. The FYQ-93 computer system was installed and operational on 14 Jun 1983 (IOC) and fully operational on 15 Sep 1983 as the Elmendorf JSS Regional Operations Control Center (ROCC). The manual NORAD control center had ceased operations on 22 Apr 1983 and control was temporally switched to a manual control center at Murphy Dome Air Force Station. The activation of the ROCC made possible the replacement of Air Force personnel with contractors at some 15 remote radar sites. The 1984-1985 change-out of older radar sets with the new minimally attended FPS-117 radar sets allowed the removal of most support and maintenance personnel from the radar sites. Maintenance and operation of the radar sites were then contracted out to a civilian firm. The controlled area was identified as the Alaskan Air Defense Sector (AADS). The Elmendorf JSS Sector Operations Control Center remained operational manned by the Alaska Air National Guard, using the FYQ-93 computers, until the Battle Control System-Fixed (BCS-F) (FYQ-156) system was installed circa 2006. About this time the name and acronym for the control center changed from Sector Operations Control Center (SOCC) to Regional Air Operations Center (RAOC). Elmendorf RAOC Royal Canadian Air Force Capt. Christopher Schenk, an air weapons officer in the Alaskan NORAD Region Regional Air Operations Center (RAOC) The RAOC is currently a component of the Alaska NORAD Region (ANR) and is operated by active Alaska Air National Guard members, Canadian servicemembers, and active duty augmentees. Inputs to the command center include digitized radar data from some 15 remote FPS-117 minimally attended radar sites, 3 remote air-ground radio sites and other sensors. Data is exchanged with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, the United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
