Charles S. Lovell

Charles Swain Lovell (1811-1871) - Born 13 Feb 1811 in Hull, Massachusetts. A career U.S. Army Infantry Officer who served in the Second Seminole War, the Mexican War and the U.S. Civil War. He rose through the enlisted ranks and then as a commissioned officer to the rank of brevet Brigadier General. Died 3 Jan 1871, Louisville, Kentucky.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private in January 1831 and rose through the enlisted ranks to quartermaster, sergeant-major. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in October 1837 in the 6th U.S. Infantry.

He served in Second Seminole War, the Mexican War and the U.S. Civil War. During the U.S. Civil War he was breveted Brigadier General for his actions in the battle of Antietam. Following the war, he was posted as a regular Army Colonel at Fort Yuma, California. He retired from active service on 15 Dec 1870.

He died of a heart attack on 3 Jan 1871 at Taylor Barracks in Louisville, Kentucky, and is buried in Cavehill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky. (Section B, Lot 1205-B)
