1st South Dakota Volunteer Infantry (1898-1899) - Organized at Sioux Falls, Worthing, Desmet, Aberdeen, Watertown, Custer City, Brooklings, and other points in South Dakota, and mustered into the service of the United States at Sioux Falls, S. Dak., May 12 to 19, 1898, with 46 officers and 983 enlisted men.

- Sailed from San Francisco on the "Rio de Janeiro" July 23; arrived in Manila Harbor August 24
- First Battalion sailed from San Francisco on the "St. Paul" July 29; arrived at Manila Harbor September 2
- Regiment stationed at Cavite until September 10, when it changed station to Manila

Mustered out of the service of the United States at San Francisco, Cal., October 5, 1899, with 46 officers and 622 enlisted men. Casualties while in service: Officers-killed in action, 3; wounded, 3; drowned, 1. Enlisted men-killed in action,20; wounded, 90; died of wounds, 4; died of disease, 35; killed by accident, 1; deserted, 4.
