Presidio Dolores de los Tejas
Presidio Dolores de los Tejas (1716-1729) - A Spanish Presidio established in 1716 by the Domingo Ramón expedition near present day Douglass, Nacogdoches County, Texas. Located near Mission San Francisco de los Tejas on the east bank of the Neches River. The Presidio was abandoned as a fortification in 1729 after a French invasion of East Texas. Also known as Presidio de los Dolores, Presidio de los Tejas and Presidio of Texas.
The Spanish Period
Established 1716 to protect four local missions of
- Mission San Francisco de los Neches
- Mission Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe
- Mission Nuestra Senora de la Purisima Concepcion
- Mission San Jose de los Nazonis.
Abandoned in 1729 after a French invasion of East Texas and relocated east of the Angelina River in 1721.
Current Status
Marker only, six miles south of Douglass in Nacogdoches County, Texas.
