Continental Village (1776-1777) - A Patriot Revolutionary War cantonment established in 1776 near present day Continental Village, Putnam County, New York. Abandoned and destroyed in 1777. History of Continental VillageEstablished in 1776 during the Revolutionary War as a Patriot army cantonment area for some 1,500 to 2,000 troops. The nearby town of Peekskill provided support and protection with Fort Independence and the Peekskill supply depot. On 9 Oct 1777, three days after the British capture of Fort Clinton and Fort Montgomery, the British sent a force of regulars and Hessians to Peekskill to destroy Fort Independence, the Peekskill supply depot and Continental Village. The Continental Village cantonment had been evacuated but supplies, stores and the newly completed barracks for the troops remained and the British troops destroyed what they could not carry off. Current StatusNo remains.
