Fort McDonough - Established in 1814 on Squam Heights on Westport Island, Maine. Fort McDonough was built to protect the island and Wiscasset from any British ships coming up the river.

Fort McDonough History

Fort McDonough was built by volunteers under the direction of William King, Major-General of military for the Eastern Division of the province of Maine. It was positioned directly across the Sheepscot River from Fort Edgecomb, enabling both forts to provide cross-fire should any ship approach. The fort was named in honor of Captain Thomas MacDonough, made famous by the Battle of Plattsburg on Sept. 11, 1814.

Fort McDonough consisted of an earthen battery, of a five pointed star shape, with six guns and a chevaus de frise, a row of sharpened stakes, across the island. It was an area landmark for many years, but is currently obscured by housing and on private property. Sometimes referred to as Fort MacDonough.

Current Status

Earthworks remain on private property.
