Fort Gilleland (1835-1842) - A U.S. Army post established in 1835 by Bvt Major James A, Ashby, 2nd U.S. Dragoons, in Newnansville, Alachua County, Florida. Probably named for Captain Lewellen Gilleland, U.S. Army, before he was killed by Indians 4 Jun 1837. Abandoned in 1842.
