Camp Harlan

Camp Harlan (1861-1862) - A U.S. Civil War Camp established in 1861 near Mount Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa. Probably named for Senator James Harlan. Renamed Camp McKean in 1862. Abandoned in 1862. Camp Harlan Plaque. Camp Harlan Medal of Honor Plaque. Camp Harlan Marker Site. History Camp Harlan was activated in October 1861 at Mount Pleasant in Henry County, Iowa. The camp was opened as a temporary Civil War rendezvous camp for the 4th Iowa Cavalry, until 22 Feb 1862, when they moved to St. Louis with twelve companies and 1086 men and officers. In the fall of 1862, the 25th Iowa Infantry used the camp, which was then named Camp McKean, to organize the 25th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Ten companies were mustered on 27 Sep 1862 with a strength of 972 men. In early November these units began moving south.
