Nashwauk FAA Radar Site (1980-Active) - A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Long Range Radar (LLR) site first established in 1980 near Nashwauk, Itasca County, Minnesota. The site is used to identify and track military and civilian aircraft movements within a 200-mile+ radius and to provide air-ground radio communication with those aircraft. Assigned a SAGE System ID of Z-306, a JSS ID of J-60 and an FAA ID of ZQJD. Active FAA Radar Site. HistoryThis site became an FAA radar site in January 1980, furnishing radar track data to the FAA ARTCC's and to USAF Direction Centers. The initial FAA ARSR-3 search radar was replaced with a ARSR-4 3D radar between 1996 and 1999. This site assumed coverage for part of the area formerly covered by Finland Air Force Station, MN (Z-69) and Baudette Air Force Station, MN (Z-132) after they closed in 1979-1980. A USAF FPS-116 was installed and manned by USAF personnel between 1980 and 1987. The radar site data is now available to the USAF/NORAD Battle Control System-Fixed (BCS-F) operations centers (EADS & WADS) as well as the FAA Minneapolis ARTCC (ZMP) and adjacent ARTCCs. Other federal agencies have access to the data under the Homeland Security umbrella.
