Manhattan Beach Military Reservation was established in December 1941 by two gun sections of Battery E, [[52nd U.S. Coast Artillery]] who arrived from [[Fort Hancock (2)]], New Jersey, on 24 Dec 1941. This unit arrived with two 8" railway guns and supporting cars and initially emplaced on 27 Dec 1941 at Railroad Avenue and 14th Street in Manhattan Beach pending the construction of a rail spur and support structures. The rail spur and support facilities were completed in August 1942 and the railroad guns moved into position on the high ground on 18th Street, Manhattan Beach. The railroad guns remained emplaced until they were ordered sent to the Sierra Ordnance Depot on 19 Apr 1944.
