== History ==
An elaborate adobe fur trading post built along the [[Santa Fe Trail]] in Otero County, Colorado. The post was located at a strategic point along the mountain route of the [[Santa Fe Trail]] adjacent to the Arkansas River.

Construction started in 1828 and was completed in 1833 by [[William Bent]], [[Charles Bent]] and [[Ceran St. Vrain]] as "[[Bent, St. Vrain & Company]]". The massive post was two stories high built of adobe brick with two circular bastions on opposing corners. The outer adobe walls measured 180 by 135 feet and were 15 feet high. At the back of the fort was a large corral for horses and livestock also protected by adobe walls. The inner courtyard was ringed with rooms for trading, blacksmithing and quarters for the occupants. A well room not only provided water for the fort but also served as an ice room for storing winter ice through the summer. The fort employed up to 60 people.

Bent established a relationship of mutual trust with the Indian tribes and the fort became a gathering place for Indians, travelers, trappers, and military. Treaties were concluded and boundaries established at the post and at times as many as 20,000 Indians were camped nearby to participate in the trading.
William Bent regularly traveled back east to Westport, Missouri (now Kansas City) to take the furs and buffalo robes he obtained from the Indians and trappers and to buy supplies for the next year of trading. His summer trips to Westport often took six months or so and he would return in time for the fall trading season. Bent's Fort also was a major resupply stop for travelers on the [[Santa Fe Trail]] and many of the famous western explorers and trappers passed through his fort and/or worked there including [[Kit Carson]] and [[John C. Fremont]].

At the time of the [[Mexican War]] (1846-1848), Mexico lay claim to much of the territory south of the Arkansas River and Bent's Fort lay right on the north side of the river and that border. During the war Bent's Fort was used as a supply depot by the U.S. troops in their invasion of the northern Mexican provinces. General [[Stephen Watts Kearny]] use the post as his advance base for his push into Mexico. [[John C. Fremont]] used it as a jumping off point in November 1848 for his expedition to find a railroad route from St. Louis to San Francisco.

All of the traffic through Bent's Fort stripped the surrounding land of timber and forage in the 1840s and by the end of the [[Mexican War]], the Indians had moved on to better land. The fur trade had declined and William Bent wanted to move to a new location some 40 miles down the Arkansas River. [[Charles Bent]] was killed in January 1847 and the two remaining partners sought unsuccessfully to lease or sell the post to the U.S. Army. The post was abandoned in 1849 and partially destroyed by [[William Bent]].

The fort has been almost completely reconstructed and is operated by the National Park service as Bents Old Fort National Historic Site, Otero County, Colorado.

== History ==
Established in March 1862 after Nashville fell to Union troops in February 1862. All the Nashville supplies, facilities and personnel, including the commander, Colonel [[Moses H. Wright]] {{Cullum|1831}}, were removed to Atlanta and a new arsenal established. The new arsenal was a large facility that eventually had thirteen buildings and employed some five thousand workers. Other Confederate arsenals supplemented the production at the Atlanta Arsenal and the Atlanta Arsenal in turn furnished horse equipment to the Army of Tennessee and other western troops.

The Atlanta Arsenal was closed and the facilities moved to other arsenals including the [[Macon Arsenal]] and the [[Columbus Arsenal (1)]] when Union General [[William T. Sherman]] {{Cullum|1022}} advanced on Atlanta in August 1864.

== Pre WWII Activities ==
Before World War I, the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of America established the Belmar Receiving Station on the future site of Camp Evans. In April 1917, at the start of U.S. involvement in [[World War I]], the U.S. Navy commandeered Belmar Station and it became a unit of their Trans-Atlantic Communication System. After World War I, the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) acquired the station but closed it in 1924.

The site was then sold to the Monmouth Pleasure Club Association (reportedly comprised of New Jersey Ku Klux Klan members). In the late 1930s, the site was purchased by King’s College, a Christian liberal arts school. The site was purchased by the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1941

== [[World War II]] ==
Established in 1941 by the U.S. Army Signal Corps as an electronics development, testing, and production facility, and continued in that general capacity until 1993.

Central to Camp Evans operations was a large complex made up of two, H-shaped buildings located between Second and Fourth streets. The two single-story buildings were connected by a long covered brick corridor and were primarily built for the production of early military radar sets.

During the War Camp Evans was responsible for several classes of radar systems used in the defense of the homeland. Primary among these were systems for aircraft detection and interception, systems for surface craft detection and fire control, and systems for Anti-Aircraft fire control including searchlight aiming. These systems were deployed in the U.S. as an aircraft warning system by the Aircraft Warning Service, as a Harbor Defense system by the Coast Artillery and as an anti-aircraft gun directing system at critical locations. Ruggedized mobile versions were provided for tactical operations overseas.

At the end of [[World War II]], Camp Evans contained some 134 buildings and structures on a 217-acre campus and was designated the Signal Corps Engineering Laboratory. In 1962, it was placed under the Army Materiel Command and it became the home of the Army Electronics Command. In 1977, it became the home of the Army Electronics and Communications Command.

In 1993 U.S. Army cost reductions caused the closure of Camp Evans. The last function left in 1999.

Now a public and private use area, part of which is now the Camp Evans Historic District with some of the original WWII buildings remaining.

On the day war was declared with Spain in 1898, the Governor of Arkansas was asked to provide two regiments of National Guard troops. Arkansas did not have enough fully trained National Guard companies to fulfill the request so a general call for volunteers was issued and the volunteers reported to a newly created Camp Dodge. Two regiments of about 1,000 soldiers each were mustered in at Camp Dodge in May 1898 and both regiments were sent to [[Camp George H. Thomas]] at Chickamauga Park, Georgia, for basic training. Camp Dodge was closed after the troops left.

== History ==
Established in 1914 as a cavalry post to counter elements of the [[Mexican Revolution]] who were raiding across the border. The camp was constructed as a temporary facility with few permanent structures. One permanent structure was the hospital located near the intersection of Gibbs Street and Bedell Avenue, where U.S. Highway 90 crosses San Felipe Creek.

Some troops at Camp Michie were sent to El Paso and joined General [[John Pershing|John Pershing's]] {{Cullum|3126}} expedition into Mexico in 1917. With the start of [[World War I]] the remaining troops at Camp Michie were used to guard the border and the High Bridge over the Pecos River.

Abandoned in 1922.

== History ==
Established in July 1848 at the end of the [[Mexican War]] by Bvt Major General [[David E. Twiggs]] with parts of six regiments and the [[2nd U.S. Dragoons]] (1,949 men total). Camp Jefferson Davis was created in East Pascagoula, Mississippi to reorganize part of the troops returning from the [[Mexican War]]. Nearby [[Camp Lawson]] on Greenwood Island contained a large hospital to care for returning wounded. [[Camp Corine]] was established two miles north near the river to house the [[2nd U.S. Dragoons]] and their horses. The Dragoons were removed to Texas in November 1848.

Troops began leaving in August 1848 and by November 1848 nearly all had been reorganized and processed to other posts. The Camp was then abandoned until about 1850 when it was renovated for use as a military asylum for the sick and wounded from all services, including those from the [[Mexican War]]. The asylum opened in May 1852 but had a short life and closed in 1855, never recovering from damage received in an 1852 hurricane and suffering from a lack of patients. The hurricane of 14-15 Sep 1860 finished off the facility and severely damaged most of the buildings. The military reservation was abandoned and later sold in 1907 to Alfred L. Dantzler.

A U.S. Army post established in January 1862 during the [[U.S. Civil War]] to insure the loyalty of southern California to the Union. Built out as an elaborate five company camp costing nearly a million dollars and having some nineteen buildings including elegant officers quarters. The post came to be known as [[Drum Barracks]] in March 1864.

The 60 acres for the post was donated to the government in 1861 by [[Phineas Banning]] and [[Benjamin D. Wilson]] for one dollar each. Banning was worried that without a strong Union presence, California would be lost to the Union.

The post was abandoned on 7 Nov 1871 and General Order No. 45, 22 Mar 1873, ordered the land returned to the original owners and the buildings sold. The buildings were sold at auction on 31 Jul 1873.
== Current Status ==
The Drum Barracks Civil War Museum is housed in the last remaining original wooden building from the camp structures. The only other remaining structure is the masonry powder magazine locate on a separate site at the NW corner of E. Opp St. and Eubank Ave. Both sites are located in Wilmington, Los Angeles County, California. The Drum Barracks Civil War Museum is open for conducted tours five days a week at specific times. This battery was designed with a counter-bombardment role to be armed with three 9.2-inch MK10 guns on modern 35 degree elevation mounts. The Battery was initially armed with two relined 9.2-inch MK10 guns on 15 degree MK5 mounts transferred from [[Signal Hill Battery]] as an "Interim Plan". A third gun was added and became operational in March 1943 on an experimental MK7, 30 degree mounting. The original two guns were later remounted on the MK7 experimental 30 degree mountings during 1944.

After the end of the war the battery remained in reserve status until it was decommissioned 1956. The guns and mounts were shipped to Turkey for NATO use.

The emplacements still exist on CFB Esquimalt Albert Head military training facility, no public access, no period guns or mounts in place.

== History ==
Ground was broken for Camp Murphy on 13 Mar 1942 by the U.S. Army Signal Corps. The post was established to train U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps personnel to operate and maintain highly secret [[SCR-268]] radar equipment. The camp was built quickly on 11,364 acres of land and formally opened on 5 Jul 1942. The post came to house some 854 officers and 5,752 enlisted personnel in over 1000 post buildings. The high-frequency radar set SCR-268 was quickly obsoleted by newer microwave radar sets and the post was no longer needed.

Camp Murphy was deactivated in 1944 and used to house migrant laborers into 1945. The buildings were sold and removed in 1946 and on 9 Jun 1947, the land was transferred to the State of Florida for use as a park. Jonathan Dickinson State Park opened in 1950.

Established in 1861 as an earthworks gun battery with emplacements for four guns. Initial armament included only two 42 pounder James rifled guns and later included two 100 pounder Parrott guns. Overlooked the Potomac River from Chain Bridge to Aqueduct Bridge.

A 17 May 1864 report from the Union Inspector of Artillery noted the following: "Battery Cameron, Maj. [[George W. Sabine]] commanding.–Garrison, one company First Maine Heavy Artillery–1 major, 5 commissioned officers 1 ordnance-sergeant, 146 men. Armament, two 42-pounder James (rifled), two 100-pounder Parrotts. Magazines, one; dry and in good order. Ammunition, full supply and serviceable. Implements, complete and serviceable. Drill in artillery, fair. Drill in infantry, ordinary. Discipline, fair. Garrison is stronger than necessary."

== History ==
Established in 1862 on a site reportedly selected by Major General [[John C. Pemberton]], {{Cullum|917}}, CSA. The battery was located on Maryrant's Bluff overlooking Winyah Bay near Georgetown, South Carolina. When built the Battery covered the approaches to Georgetown at a strategic narrow point in the Bay.

The battery was plagued by a lack of manpower and appropriate armament. In February 1863 there were only 53 men and nine guns at the battery, hardly enough to ward off a serious Union attack. Desertions to the enemy by eleven Confederate soldiers further compromised the defense and by February 1864 the battery was discovered deserted by a Union landing party. The battery was taken and Georgetown was occupied by forces under Rear Admiral [[John A. Dahlgren]] aboard his flagship Harvest Moon. The Harvest Moon would later hit a mine and sink as it left Georgetown, parts of the wreck can still be seen today.

Abandoned at the end of the war in 1865.

This battery lay virtually untouched for about 100 years and is in remarkable condition for its age. This battery is one of the few Civil War batteries that has large caliber guns that were original to the Battery. The two 10" Columbiad guns were manufactured late in the war at the famous Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond, Virginia.

This Battery sits in a beautiful setting with well cared for grounds and a marked pathway through the whole battery. At each feature, there is a small numbered maker (1 to 15) that is keyed to the Battery White Memorial Trail Guide (download here before you visit).

This battery is located in the gated Belle Isle Gardens Yacht Club complex, access can be obtained at the gate by dialing the 4 digit code on the intercom and requesting to visit Battery White. == [[World War I]] (1917-1918) ==
One of sixteen National Guard Training Camps established in 1917 to train World War I National Guard units and organize them into Federal divisions. The Camp was established in 1917 under the supervision of construction quartermaster Major [[Matthew Hanson]] on a site of about 1,377 acres. The reservation encompassed some 10,700 acres. The camp was to have a capacity of 45,000 men. It was complete in November 1917 at an eventual cost of $4,500,000.

The first commander of the Camp was Major General [[James Parker]] who formed the [[32nd U.S. Infantry Division]] and organized the training of the troops. The first elements of the 32nd arrived at Camp MacArthur in August 1917 and departed for France in January 1918. The 32nd distinguished itself in France earning the name "Les Terribles" for their successful, tenacious attacks on enemy positions. The division suffered 13,261 casualties with 2,250 killed, more than 800 officers and enlisted men were decorated by foreign governments. The 32nd came home and was inactivated on 5 Apr 1919.

At the end of the war Camp MacArthur became a demobilization center until it was abandoned on 15 May 1919.

The camp was established as a temporary camp to control and safeguard the Indian Population on the Moses Columbia Reservation. The post was garrisoned by three companies (D, E, and I) of the [[2nd U.S. Infantry]] on 2 Sep 1879. The post was built out with barracks, officer quarters, and a sawmill but the remote location and transportation difficulties forced the abandonment of the post. On 13 Oct 1880, four companies of the [[2nd U.S. Infantry]] (D, E, F, and I) under the command of Colonel [[Henry C. Merriam|Merriam]] moved to the junction of the Spokane River and the Columbia River and began construction on [[Fort Spokane (2)]].

Established in August 1861 as a earthen gun battery on a bluff overlooking the Chain Bridge from the Washington DC side of the Potomac River. Emplacements for three guns.

A 17 May 1864 report from the Union Inspector of Artillery noted the following: "Battery Martin Scott, Colonel Gibson commanding.–Garrison, 4 enlisted men. Armament, two 12-pounder mountain howitzers, two 6-pounder James (rifled). Magazines, one; serviceable. Ammunition, supply sufficient; serviceable. Garrison is insufficient."

The battery was abandoned in 1865 at the end of the war.

The Cambridge Battery was originally built for the then new rifled muzzle-loading (RML) guns. The RML guns were much more accurate and powerful than the non-rifled muzzle loaders of the past. The RML shells had brass pegs positioned on their sides that imparted spin to the shells by following the rifling groves in the gun barrel. The shells were larger and more accurate because they did not tumble through the air.

Battery construction began in 1862 and it was completed on 31 Dec 1868 at a cost of 8,120 pounds. The battery was armed with three 7" RML guns and then later with five 10" RML guns.

Sometime after 1878 two 6-inch breech-loading long guns were emplaced. The 10" RML guns were last fired at Cambridge Battery in 1904.

At the beginning of World War II the battery was still armed with two 6-inch breech-loading guns. Dismantled in 1918, the two guns were sent to Sydney, Cape Breton Island.

== Current Status ==
The site belongs to the Halifax City Park system, This area is now home to Shakespeare by the Sea's seasonal productions. One RML gun in place. The 6" gun emplacements are partly buried with only the upper part exposed.

Originally built as a temporary [[World War II]] coastal gun battery with two 155mm rapid fire guns mounted on mobile marriages emplaced on circular Panama mounts.

Located on a 10 acre site that included some 21 temporary buildings, a rifle range and ammunition magazine. The property was originally obtained from Ventura County on 15 Aug 1942. Units conducted monthly live fire target practice on offshore towed targets.

Property returned to Ventura County on 15 May 1945.

Established 26 May 1898 in Jacksonville to organize and train the 7 Army Corps commanded by General [[Fitzhugh Lee]] {{Cullum|1755}}, nephew of General [[Robert E. Lee]] {{Cullum|542}}.

The camp was planned for a maximum of 20,000 men but grew to 31,000 by September 1898. There were three primary locations within the camp with separate locations for each of the regiments.

The main original camp was described as "... camp boundaries were Iona Street on the east, 8th street on the north, Main Street on the west, and 1st street on the south." This original camp was located near the rail facilities but spread north as more units arrived, reaching the water's edge at Trout Creek.

Established in 1862 as an outworks of [[Fort Bayard (1)]] with emplacements for three guns. This battery was not normally armed but was intended to provide a prepared battery for field pieces if they were required. The battery was actually located adjacent to the fort accessed by a stairway over the fort wall. The battery continued into a rifle pit on the right side.

The battery was abandoned in 1865 at the end of the war.

== [[World War I]] (1917-1918) ==
One of sixteen U.S. Army National Guard Mobilization and Training Camps established in 1917 to train and integrate National Guard units for service in a U.S. Army division. Camp Logan was established on 27 July 1917 under the supervision of construction quartermaster Captain [[William P. Rothrock]] on a site of about 3,002 acres within a 9,560 acre leased reservation. The camp was to have a capacity of about 45,000 officers and enlisted men who would become the [[33rd U.S. Infantry Division]]. The first phase of camp construction was completed 15 Aug 1917 with an eventual cost of $ 3,700,000.

The first commander of the camp was Major General [[James Parker]] {{Cullum|2623}} who formed the [[33rd U.S. Infantry Division]] and started the training of the troops. The 33rd was officially organized 27 Aug 1917 and departed for France in April-May 1918. The 33rd distinguished itself in combat during the war and suffered 8,401 casualties including 798 killed. The 33rd returned to the U.S. in May 1919 and was demobilized 6 Jun 1919 at [[Camp Grant (5)]], Illinois.

At the end of the war Camp Logan became a demobilization center until it was abandoned in 1919. The land was returned to the owners, later acquired by the city and later became Memorial Park.
== Houston Riot (1917) ==
On 23 Aug 1917, 156 black soldiers from Camp Logan, armed with stolen weapons marched on Houston to free black soldiers that had been unjustly jailed by local authorities. The soldiers were met by citizens and local authorities and a riot ensued, killing 20 people. The black soldiers returned to camp and were arrested and eventually tried for their participation in the riot. Of the 156 participants 19 black soldiers were hanged and 63 received life sentences.

Rebels under [[Nathaniel Bacon]] seized and fortified the house of Major [[Arthur Allen II]] in September 1676. [[Nathaniel Bacon]] himself never occupied the house and he died in October 1676 of dysentery. The house remained under rebel control until it was recaptured by loyal sailors 29 Dec 1676. The house continued to have a military role through January 1677. Without [[Nathaniel Bacon]] the rebellion fell apart and the house was returned to the family.
== Current Status ==
Acquired by Preservation Virginia in the 1970s, restored and now operated as a historic site and museum in Surry County, Virginia. Open to the public on specific days and limited hours but open for exterior self guided tours most days.

== History ==
A temporary U.S. Army camp established 18 Jul 1863 during the Sibley Campaign by General [[Henry Hastings Sibley]]. Camp Atchison was created to hold and protect General Sibley's command while he took a mobile force to force the hostile Sioux Indians back across the Missouri River. General Sibley left behind his baggage train, wounded soldiers, tired horses and anything else that would slow him down. He left two companies of infantry behind and he had rifle trenches and breastworks built to protect the group.

General Sibley created many camps across North Dakota during his campaign but Camp Atchison was the most substantial and the longest lasting. Most of the camps lasted just a couple of days.

Camp Atchison was abandoned 12 Aug 1863 when General Sibley returned from his successful mission.

The two 12-pounder pedestal mounted guns were replaced during [[World War II]] with a single twin-barrel 6-pounder gun that was faster and more accurate. Additional changes to the battery included a new crew shelter, magazine and fire control tower.

The battery was designed to defend against fast enemy Motor Torpedo Boats (MTBs) and E-boats which could dash into harbors, shoot up shipping and exit at incredible speeds. In the semi-automatic mode, the twin 6-pounders could deliver 72 rounds per minute even though the rounds were hand loaded from trays of shells.

Part of Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site of Canada in British Columbia, Canada. Battery Belmont is thought to have the only remaining twin 6-pounder duplex gun on display and also has one of the old 12-pounder guns that preceded the twin 6-pounder guns. The camp was to have a capacity of about 30,000 officers and enlisted men. The [[41st U.S. Infantry Division]] was supposed to be formed at Camp Fremont but that division was formed at [[Camp Greene]] in North Carolina instead. The regular Army [[8th U.S. Infantry Division]] was then selected to be formed at Camp Fremont. The camp was mostly complete in November 1917 at an eventual cost of $ 2,600,000.

The [[8th U.S. Infantry Division]] was formed at Camp Fremont in December 1917. The division began to embark at Hoboken on 30 Oct 1918 for France just as the armistice was to take effect. Some of the units of the division made it to France but none of the division saw action. The 41st returned to the U.S. and was demobilized in various places.

The post was ordered salvaged on 19 Dec 1918 and abandoned in September 1919. The land reverted to the previous owners and the buildings were sold at auction.

The post hospital became a part of the VA hospital, Palo Alto, San Mateo County, California.

== History of Buckingham House ==
Established in October 1792 by [[William Tomison]] for the [[Hudson's Bay Company]] in response to the building of [[Fort George (16)|Fort George]] by the [[North West Company]]. Tomison built Buckingham House just several hundred yards from [[Fort George (16)|Fort George]] but on higher ground. Fort George was always the larger of the two posts with some 60 men and their families while Buckingham House had about 38 men and their families. The two posts shared a water supply (well) and came together when a common defense was required. There was a fierce competition for the fur trade.

The competition for beaver pelts caused a drastic decline in the local beaver population and in 1800 both posts were abandoned and moved further upriver where the beaver still thrived.

Part of the Fort George and Buckingham House Provincial Historic Site near Elk Point, Alberta. The Buckingham House site is interpreted with poles indicating the palisade corners and gates. A U.S. Army camp established as [[Camp Nogales]] in November 1910 in response to Mexican political problems along the border. In 1916 the post responded to Pancho Villa’s raids into the U.S. with a rapid build-up that brought over 10,000 troops to the post within two weeks. The [[World War I]] strength reaching a peak of 12,000 men on the post. After the war, the post population was reduced to less than 1,000 men. The camp was abandoned on 5 May 1933.

== History ==
Established in January 1918 to provide balloon instruction for U.S Army personnel, officer and enlisted in the U.S. Army Balloon Corps. The first camp commander was Lt. Colonel [[James Prentice]]. The camp grew to have four ballons and about 33 officers and 1,800 men. It quickly began to graduate balloon companies for service overseas. In June 1918 two companies were sent to [[Ross Field]] in Arcadia, California, to establish an Army Balloon School on the west coast.

The camp was abandoned on 20 May 1919 and all the serviceable equipment and 15 Balloon Companies were sent to nearby [[Brooks Field]]. The Buildings and other property were later sold at auction and the land sold to developers.

== History ==
A World War II U.S. Marine training camp located in near the old Leamington Lighthouse (1879-1932) on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Used to train Marine anti-aircraft units and defense battalions.

Gun emplacements and searchlights were built on the beach. Training was conducted on guns ranging from 5" naval guns to 30 and 50 caliber machine guns.

The old Leamington Lighthouse iron skeleton tower was painted green and used by the Marines as a lookout tower. Tents surrounded the tower base and nearby were barracks, a mess hall, a hospital, an exchange, a headquarters building and various other support buildings. The Marines reportedly paved the first road on the island, which ran from the lighthouse complex to the ferry landing at Jenkins Island.

The Camp was abandoned sometime in 1944 as WWII conflict shifted to Europe and the Pacific islands.

== Current Status ==
The Leamington lighthouse tower, also known as the Hilton Head Rear Range Light, is the only viewable remains of Camp McDougal. The tower still stands on the golf course of the gated Palmetto Dunes Plantation community.

Accessable by applying for a pass to view the Lighthouse at the main gate of the Palmetto Dunes Plantation community.

== History ==
In the summer of 1861, Confederate forces made plans to defend the approaches to New Orleans from the north with a line of breastworks, to be fortified with up to 50 pieces of heavy ordnance. By late summer, fortifications were already erected from the Mississippi River north toward the swamp. These fortifications were described as being an extended parapet nine feet high fronted by a 30-foot-wide moat six feet deep. The line of breastworks had not been completed when Commodore Farragut's Union fleet broke through the two forts guarding the southern route to New Orleans and appeared before the city on 25 Apr 1862. Fleeing Confederate forces abandoned the unfinished defenses leaving behind the heavy artillery already emplaced.

== Fort John M. Morgan ==
Confederate [[Fort John M. Morgan]] was on the east bank of the Mississippi river bank at the southern terminus of the breastworks which stretched northward about 1.5 miles. The fort was officially named "Fort John Morgan" by New Orleans commander Major General [[Mansfield Lovell]] on 21 Mar 1862, just a month before Union forces arrived.

The arriving Union forces found nine 42-pounders and two 32-pounders inside the fort, along with the remainder of the line, were nine 24-pounder carronades and four 18-pounders. All but nine of the cannons had been spiked by the retreating Confederates and all the carriages had been at least partially burned by them. There was some indication that the garrison had been removed to the south side of the city when it became apparent that Farragut's attack was coming from the south up the Mississippi.

The magazine at the fort was found empty. A hotshot furnace was undisturbed at the site and about 1000 rounds of 32-pounder shot were found. Confederate gunners from the fort had carried away their remaining stores and left via the Jackson Railroad, minus their heavy artillery. The unnamed gun battery supporting the Fort Morgan on the other side of the Mississippi River was found in similar condition. That battery was replaced with the Union [[Fort Banks (1)|Fort Banks]].

== Camp Parapet ==
A November 1863 Union map of what the Union forces had come to describe as Camp Parapet included the completed breastworks with three fortifications along its length and several campgrounds behind the fortifications. The Union forces had upgraded the original Confederate defenses to protect against any attempt by the Rebels to retake New Orleans by coming down the Mississippi River. The Union Camp Parapet averaged some 3,500 troops at any one time during its operation.

At the southern terminus was the former Fort John M. Morgan now referred to as the Main Redoubt. The Main Redoubt overlooked the Mississippi river at Nine Mile Point with a commanding view of any southbound river traffic but of little use against northbound traffic which is where Farragut's attack had come from.

In 1865 the Main Redoubt is shown with three magazines, officer’s quarters, a guardhouse, an observatory, and a hot-shot furnace. The main powder magazine, which sat adjacent to the northeast wall of the enclosure, is the same one that is now restored in the Arlington Street park. Another magazine was situated against the wall in the southwest corner, while the third and smallest appears to be built into the northwest wall. The two smaller magazines may have stored extra arms and supplies rather than powder. The main magazine, however, was carefully constructed to resist explosive charges.

=== Star Redoubt ===
At the northern terminus of the line was the Star Redoubt. This fortification built as far north on the line as practicable. The Star Redoubt was a heavily armed 10-pointed star earthwork with a magazine at its center. It bordered on what was then a swamp and at times the fortification had standing water inside. The Star Redoubt was located near present-day 45th St. and N Causeway Blvd near Archbishop Rummel High School. A large portion of the labor for these improvements was contributed by former slaves who found refuge at the Federal camp.

Along the middle section of the line was a cavalier (a raised gun platform to protect the two redoubts and the middle of the line). Behind this well-armed line were a number of Union camps and facilities.

Confederate forces never attempted to retake Camp Parapet and the camp became a haven for fleeing slaves. The authorities at the camp first attempted to organize the slaves into work crews and then began to enlist them into the army, forming some of the first black military units in the Union Army. By 1865 African American regiments were in the majority at Camp Parapet.

== Post-U.S. Civil War ==

Camp Parapet was Abandoned as a fortification at the end of the war in 1865. From the late 1800s through the 1920s, the magazine of the former Fort John M. Morgan served as the Jefferson Parish East Bank Jail. Prisoners were held here until they could be transported to the West Bank Jail or were released. In 1963, the magazine was dedicated as a historical site by Jefferson Parish. In 1977, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It was restored in 1981.

Established by Company E, [[7th U.S. Infantry]] early in 1830 with Captain [[George Birch]] commanding. This company was relieved by Company F, [[3rd U.S. Infantry]], who arrived on 7 Nov 1831. The change of command took place on 8 Nov 1831 and Company E departed the post on 10 Nov 1831. The relieving Company was commanded by Captain [[Harrison]], this company later departed the post on 2 Jan 1832 and transferred to [[Fort Jesup]], Louisiana.

Camp Atkinson was established to suppress smuggling from the Gulf up the Calcasieu River. The commanding officer of the troops was also appointed a customs inspector.

The post was erected to quiet the openly pro Confederate sentements in the Visalia area. The site was moved in 1865 northeast of the first location to further separate the post from the town.

Originally built as a temporary [[World War II]] coastal gun battery for four 155mm M1918 rapid fire guns mounted on M1918 mobile carriages. The location at Signal Hill provided a 380 degree field of fire of 17,400 yards (about 10 miles).

In 1942 the Signal Hill Battery became one of three prepared battery locations for mobile 155mm guns for the defense of St. John's Harbor, Newfoundland. The three locations were not normally armed but were prepared with circular concrete Panama mounts ready for quick deployment of the guns and carriages from a central location. Only two guns and carriages were in storage, the remaining two guns were deployed to [[Battery 155 - Stephenville]].

The three battery locations were collectively identified as tactical battery #2 (TAC-2) on the U.S. [[World War II]] Harbor Defense Plan.

As of 31 Dec 1944, Battery C of the 24th Coast Artillery Battalion was assigned to the TAC-2 guns.

Camp Austin was established in 1839 as Austin was being laid out as the capital of the Republic of Texas. In 1840 the Austin Arsenal was established in the southeast town block which had been reserved for it when the town was laid out. In 1841 the regular troops of the Republic of Texas were disbanded and Camp Austin was occupied by a number of volunteer units until Texas became a State 19 Feb 1846. The first federal troops actually arrived in 1845 and occupied Camp Austin until 1854. During the [[U.S. Civil War]] Camp Austin was in Confederate hands and was returned to Federal control at the end of the war. Camp Austin was closed in Aug 1875.

The Second Army Corps was to be composed wholly of state volunteer troops who had been mustered in at their respective state camps. They began arriving by rail on 18 May 1898.

The camp was hurriedly built and lacked an adequate water supply and basic sanitation needs when large numbers of troops started to arrive. Camp officers struggled to get enough wells dug to supply the drinking water, bathing water, cooking water and sanitary water needs of the almost 23,000 men sent to the camp. In the end some 40 wells were dug before an adequate supply was established. The sanitary facilities were not complete when troops began to arrive and the troops used the nearby woods as a latrine. The failure to establish sanitary facilities and discipline on arrival inevitably led to disease and finally, after an epidemic of typhoid fever broke out in early August, to its abandonment later in the month. The troops were moved to [[Camp George G. Meade]] in Pennsylvania and the camp was abandoned. The sale of the land began in September 1898.

Two separate markers, one on Arlington Blvd. (U.S. 50) near Fenwick St., Falls Church, VA, and the second in Dunn Lorring on Sandburg Street. The Falls Church marker is in the proximity of the Corps Headquarters while the Dunn Lorring marker is near the rail depot. No remains of the camp.

Established in fall of 1799 for the [[Hudson's Bay Company]] by [[James Bird]]. The post was situated next to the [[North West Company]] [[Rocky Mountain House]] and the two post competed for the local fur trade. Trading proved unprofitable and both posts closed and reopened several times over the years. The two companies merged together in 1821 under the [[Hudson's Bay Company]] name but the post retained the Rocky Mountain House name. The Acton House site was abandoned in 1834-35.
== Current Status ==
Part of the Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site near the town of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. The site of Action House is clearly marked at south end of the David Thompson Trail (a 3.2 km loop). The fort is outlined with a partial steel frame that represents the palisade and the bastions. The interior buildings are outlined with low wood timbers. The whole site can be viewed from an observation tower just up the trail.

Established in 1861 with construction starting on 13 Sep 1861. Powder production began on 10 Apr 1862 and continued until 29 Apr 1865.

In 1861, Confederate President Jefferson Davis selected Lt Colonel [[George W. Rains|George Washington Rains]], {{Cullum|1113}}, to construct and operate a gunpowder factory at Augusta. Colonel Rains was a decorated military officer, a West Point Graduate of the class of 1842 who fought in Mexican War and resigned his commission in 1856 to operate his Washington Iron Works in Newburg, New York.

At the outset of the [[U.S. Civil War]] Rains elected to join the Confederacy, was promoted to Lt. Colonel and asked by Jefferson Davis to establish the Powder Works at Augusta. He was promoted to full colonel on 12 Jul 1863.

Rains selected the site of the original [[Augusta Arsenal]] between the Savannah River and the Augusta Canal because it offered easy transportation, water power and relative security from attack. The 26 building powder production complex stretched for two miles along the Augusta Canal with the raw materials coming in one end and the finished powder exiting the other. The central buildings were the saltpeter refinery building and laboratory buildings which included a 153-foot tall smokestack and unfinished clock tower.

During the operating years, the powder works produced some 2.75 million pounds of the best quality gunpowder. Production continued almost unabated, even though the works suffered four explosions, until the very end of the war.

Abandoned at the end of the war on 29 Apr 1865. Partially destroyed and then mostly razed by post-war canal expansion in the 1870s. Rains asked that the chimney be spared as a memorial to those that died during the war.

== Current Status ==
The only remaining remnant of the original works is said to be an Obelisk-Chimney that has been constructed near the center of the works. It is unclear if this is an actual remanent or a complete reconstruction. There is now a large abandoned factory building behind the Obelisk-Chimney that resembles the style of the original buildings but it is not of that era. There is a roadside marker and an interpretive panel at the Obelisk-Chimney. The Obelisk-Chimney also has stone panel inserts on the sides.

In 1816 after the end of the [[War of 1812]] Baton Rouge was selected as the site of the [[Baton Rouge Barracks]] and [[Baton Rouge Arsenal]]. Construction of the barracks began in 1819 from a design by Lieutenant [[James Gadsden]] of Gadsden Purchase fame. The barracks was designed with four barracks buildings and a single quartermaster building arranged in a pentagon. Construction was completed in 1821 but the quartermaster building was defective and was torn down the same year. The four barracks buildings were built of brick and had a capacity of some 1,000 troops.

The barracks provided troops for the [[Seminole War II|Second Florida Seminole War]] and the [[Mexican War]].

Just prior to the beginning of the [[U.S. Civil War]] Louisiana Governor [[Thomas Moore]] assembled a state militia force and demanded the surrender of the barracks and the nearby [[Baton Rouge Arsenal]]. The garrison commander, Captain [[Joseph Haskins]], faced with a superior force, was forced to surrender both installations on 10 Jan 1861 and depart the area. After the war had started and the Confederate government was formed, the barracks and the arsenal came under the control of the CSA.

Union forces took back the barracks and arsenal for the duration of the war after the battle of Baton Rouge, 5 Aug 1862. They constructed an earthworks around both the arsenal and the barracks that was named [[Fort Williams (2)]] after Union General [[Thomas Williams]] {{Cullum|902}} who was killed in the battle of Baton Rouge.

The barracks housed U.S. troops during the reconstruction period until it was deactivated on 6 Jun 1879. A small caretaker detachment remained at the barracks until 1886 when it was turned over to Louisiana State University. The University transferred the property to the State of Louisiana in the 1920s and it eventually became state offices.

One of sixteen U.S. Army National Army Mobilization and Training Camps established in 1917 to train and integrate National Army units for service in a U.S. Army division. Camp Funston was established in July 1917 under the supervision of construction quartermaster Captain [[Fred J. Herman]] on a site of about 2,000 acres. The camp was to have a capacity of about 54,000 officers and enlisted men that would become the [[89th U.S. Infantry Division]]. The camp was mostly completed by 1 Sep 1917 by the contractor, George A. Fuller Company, at an eventual cost of $ 10,700,000.

The first commander of the camp was Major General [[Leonard Wood]] who formed the [[89th U.S. Infantry Division]] and initiated troop training. The 89th was formed in August 1917 and departed for France in June 1918 The Division distinguish itself in combat operations and suffered 7,291 casualties. The 89th returned to the U.S. in May-June 1919 and was demobilized.

At the end of the war the camp became a demobilization center until it was abandoned in 1919. Camp Funston was torn down in the 1920s and the lumber sold at auction. Camp Funston became a maneuver area.

== Current Status ==
Foundation(s) and two markers on [[Fort Riley (2)|Fort Riley]], Riley County, Kansas. A sign marker sits at the base of the hill where the foundation of the headquarters building can be seen. The stone Funston Monument is nearby, both markers are along Huebner Road between E Street and H Street.

Established in November-December 1862 as an "C" shaped earthworks gun battery with emplacements for six field guns. Armament included two field pieces emplaced after July 1864.

The fort was abandoned in 1865 at the end of the war.
== Current Status ==
Battery Bailey is on a hilltop in Westmoreland Hills Park,. Gun emplacements have been restored and are still visible. A marker at the site parking lot and several interpretive panels before the battery.

Camp Lewis was a temporary camp established on 10 May 1874 in present-day Lewistown, Montana, by elements of the [[7th U.S. Infantry]] from [[Fort Shaw]]. Built along the Big Spring Creek Fork of the Judith River and located two miles south of the city in 1874. Abandoned on 1 Nov 1874.
